Chandigarh police brutally lathicharged students on behest of PU Authorities

Chandigarh Police brutally lathicharged the protesting students in Panjab University and detained nearly 40 students from protest site at VC residence. Later in the evening, detained students were released.

Yesterday a joint call for protest was given by ASA, NSUI, PURSA, Sath, SFS, SOI and SOPU. More than hundred research scholars gathered at VC office. Main demands of the protest were- consider lockdown period zero for Hostel stay, extension for thesis submission, give hostels to all scholars irrespective of guide from university or outside and other demands including immediate withdrawal of false complaints against protesting students. All party representatives urged to fulfil scholars’ demands immediately and stop harrasment of scholars by calling their parents and respective guides. After an hour PU authorities’ representatives arrived with no solution. Students then decided to march towards VC house. There scholars waited for two hours. VC house was immediately turned into police cantonment. When students reached at the gate of VC house Chandigarh police brutally lathicharged them at the behest of Associate DSW Ashok Kumar, who was present at protest site. Even girl research scholars were also brutally assaulted. After that Chandigarh police detained protesting research scholars and students. Students studying in library immediately gathered at gate number 2 in solidarity of detained scholars. They were also arrested by police.

As per information, VC, DSWs and other PU authorities are putting pressure on Chandigarh police to file FIRs on protesting research scholars. Student Organizations strongly condemn PU authorities and their fascist onslaught on its research scholars and students. Students and research scholars are in high spirits and determined to fight for their democratic rights.
