Former Kyrgyz President survives assassination attempt

Former Kyrgyzstan President, Almazbek Atambayev, survived an assassination attempt in capital Bishkek. Russian news agency RIA reports that shots were fired at his car.

Almazbek Atambayev recently freed from prison amid unrest following a disputed parliamentary vote. Election results initiate a new escalation of violence in the Central Asian country.

Hours earlier, President Sooronbay Jeenbekov, who is facing calls to step down, declared a state of emergency in the capital and ordered troops to quell unrest.

A curfew and strict military restrictions have been imposed, including controls on who can travel in and out of the capital.

The decree also gives permission to the army to set up security posts in Bishkek, deploying soldiers and military hardware.

The violence this week has left at least one person dead and 1,000 people injured.
