The President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, has strongly condemned the recent incident where an Amritdhari (initiated) Sikh was prevented from entering Delhi’s Jhilmil Metro Station with his kirpan. Dhami stated that this act is a violation of the Indian Constitution and expressed concern over the rising incidents that undermine the religious sentiments of Sikhs. He pointed out that the Indian Constitution guarantees every citizen the freedom to practice and protect their religious beliefs, and Sikhs, as per their faith, are required to wear the five kakaars (symbols of faith), including the kirpan.
Dhami also referenced a recent incident where the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security issued a directive prohibiting Sikh employees from wearing their kirpans at airports, a move that the SGPC had strongly opposed. He emphasized that the act of a CISF officer stopping a Sikh from entering the metro station with a kirpan is a direct attack on religious rights, and a video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The SGPC President called on the Indian government to take swift and strong action against the CISF employee involved and ensure that Sikhs are not discriminated against for wearing their religious symbols. He urged the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Delhi Government to address this issue promptly and safeguard the rights of Sikhs in India.
